In his inaugural lecture, Jonny Freeman will present highlights from 20 years of research on human interaction with data, conducted in collaborative academic projects funded by the EU, and in a range of projects by i2 media research – the Goldsmiths spin-off he founded in 2002 to explore how we can work with technology for the benefit of businesses and consumers.

The common theme running through the projects is that an understanding of a person’s state of mind when they're exploring different types of data (be it a range of products, commercial messages in advertising, scientific literature or immersive visualisations of large scale networks) can be used to optimise what is presented to the user, enhancing people’s ability to explore the data.

Jonny’s presentation will provide examples of research that infers user mindset through real time explicit and implicit responses of the user, and describe controlled evaluations demonstrating potential applications of the approach.

As an expert in media and consumer psychology and human factors of digital media, Professor Jonathan Freeman leads his team's innovative research for high profile clients at the cutting edge of the intersection between people and media, using qualitative, quantitative, behavioural, and experimental research approaches.

His research includes major EU projects such as CEEDs and MINDSEE and work with Innovate UK on connected retail (MINDScape).

Subjects span connected retail, advertising effectiveness, behavioural adaptation through wearables and media, presence and engagement in media spanning video to immersive virtual reality, digital UX, user engagement in social media and games, and implicit interaction between humans and responsive media systems.

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
