UPA 2020 Conference and Pecha Kucha Competition, Birmingham University, 6 March 2020
Two students from the Centre for Academic Language and Literacies won first prize in a public speaking competition at this year’s annual University Pathways Alliance conference. Regina Avendaño Trueba and Shuroug Alhammami, who are both students on the International Foundation Certificate in Social Sciences, competed against students from eight other UK universities at the conference held at Birmingham University on Friday 6 March.
All competitors delivered presentations on ‘The Secret Life of International Students in the UK’ using the ‘pecha kucha’ format: 20 slides which automatically change every 20 seconds. In rewarding the £100 prize, the panel recognised the liveliness of Regina’s and Shuroug’s delivery and appreciated the originality of their insights.
The University Pathway Alliance champions high-quality international pathway programmes which are designed, owned and delivered by its member institutions. Other members include Queen Mary, St Andrews, Leeds, Southampton, Reading and Kent.
