Sam grew up in Bristol. He immersed himself throughout the 90's in the trip-hop and drum and bass scenes. Simultaneously he was learning classical piano. He moved to London in 2001 to study Linguistics at UCL before deciding to study Jazz at Trinity College Of Music. He graduated in 2006 and went on to release 2 highly acclaimed jazz records under his own name.

He has toured the world performing at venues such as Sydney Opera House, Coachella, Glastonbury and many others with artists including The Cinematic Orchestra, Rosie Lowe, The Invisible, Matthew Herbert and Valerie June. 

Apart from playing keyboards for an array of artists, his main focus is writing and producing for his own group Native Dancer.

His performances include Panufnik's Concertino for Percussion with Evelyn Glennie to Stockhausen's Refrains and Zyklus at the Aldeburgh Festival, and he was invited by Sir George Solti to perform, film, and record for CBS Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion with Solti, Murray Periah and Evelyn Glennie, a recording that subsequently won a coveted Grammy award.

David also played in Britten's chamber opera The Turn of the Screw under the composer's baton, the composer subsequently adding a specially composed timpani and percussion part to his cantata Rejoice in the Lamb for him as well as the timpani part his last opera Death in Venice.

David teaches timpani and conducting at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and amongst many ensembles he has directed the English Chamber Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa and the London Concert Orchestra, as well as engagements in Vienna, Milan, Zurich and elsewhere, and is in addition Staff Conductor at the Guildhall School of Music, Assistant Conductor of Southbank Sinfonia, and Musical Director of Orchestra of the Arts.

His achiements include a First Prize in the 22nd Brant International Piano Competition, British Music Society Awards, R.C.M. Chappell Gold Medal, a Director's Golden Jubilee Award at the R.C.M., Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition as well as a laureate of the Corpus Christi, U.S.A. International Competition for Piano and Strings.

He has recently performed concertos by Shostakovich, Brahms and Rachmaninov. His second album for Willowhayne Records will be released in 2017.

Viktoria studied music at the University of Athens (BMus Hons), violin performance at the Royal Academy of Music (MA) and has submitted a PhD thesis on Sergei Prokofiev's violin music at Goldsmiths.

Viktoria is a qualified music and violin teacher (QTS, LRAM) and an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Viktoria has performed recitals in venues such as the Southbank Centre's Purcell Room and Royal Festival Hall, and has published articles in The Strad and Three Oranges on the violin music of Sergei Prokofiev.

As a studio and concert arranger/ MD he has worked with the RPO, Terry Riley, Pulp, numerous choirs and big bands and for a decade toured with Jools Holland as Baritone Sax player and arranger, performing with artists including Sting, BB King, Barry White, Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Kylie Minogue, Lemmy (of Motorhead fame) and Chaka Khan. Recent large-scale arranging projects include working with the Puppini Sisters on their Moscow and Germany visits with full symphony orchestra versions of their material.

He has composed for film, TV and contemporary dance, as a sax player has performed on and worked as an arranger for all the Major TV channels and for 10 years ran Mbawula, a multi-cultural ensemble celebrating the fusion of South African song and European Big Band Jazz, with a strong community engagment focus.

Paul has taught at every level from beginner’s workshops to post-graduate composition at universities and conservatoires including the Department of Music at Goldsmiths (Analysis, History, Techniques and Arranging In Jazz); Royal College Of Music (C20th Music); Birkbeck College (Harmony and Counterpoint); City Lit. (Township music, Big Band); and Trinity Laban Conservatoire (C20th Studies, Making Art Happen, Engaging Audiences, Arranging and Musical Direction, Composition,Colab).

At Goldsmiths Paul currently teaches Saxophone, Arranging in Jazz,Techniques in Jazz and Performance, supervises Creative Research Project students and runs the department’s large Jazz Ensemble, Contemporary Jazz Ensemble.

Mikko Gordon has worked as a Producer and Engineer since graduating from Goldsmiths, University of London with a degree in Music. During this time he has worked with artists such as Atoms For Peace, Gaz Coombes (Supergrass), Chris Difford (Squeeze), Fred Deakin (Lemonjelly), Buraka Som Sistema as well as brands such as Adidas, Intel, Nokia and Reebok. Between 2012 - 2014 Mikko worked for Radiohead Producer Nigel Godrich.

He is responsible for the design of the Goldsmiths Music Studios and oversees the running and development of the facility.

A strong advocate of contemporary music, she has been the recipient of new cello works written by composers from the United States, Canada, Korea, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Performing worldwide, London venues include, the Royal Festival Hall, Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.

Rebecca studied at the University of Canterbury (BMus), Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University (MM) and Goldsmiths College, University of London (PhD), and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Alongside her teaching position at Goldsmiths, she is the owner and director of Creative Sounds Music Academy.

Gamalova performs as a soloist with various symphony and chamber orchestras and as a chamber musician with leading pianists around the globe. She has given masterclasses and lectures in many countries in Europe, Asia and America. She has recordings and publications in different languages and countries. She has also written music to her own lyrics and inspired a new form of musical compositions (concertos, ballades) for violin and viola performed by one soloist for which she is the dedicatee and first performer.

She worked as principal concertmaster of the current Elbland Philharmonie in Germany and later moved to UK focusing on solo performance and teaching (at Goldsmiths University since 1997, at Trinity and Royal Birmingham Conservatories since 2000, and at London College of Music since 2005). Her advanced students frequently achieve high results in their performance exams, win festivals and competitions and have successful careers as soloists, chamber musicians and orchestra players.

She also worked as a recitalist for Menuhin's 'Live Music Now' bringing live classical music to disadvantaged audiences, and continues to take forward transmitting this mission worldwide.

Gamalova has been Artistic Director of several educative projects, adjudicator of competitions and runs a Charity in aid of young musicians and children with diabetes.

Among her recent awards are the prestigious 'Crystal Lyre 2013' for “outstanding artistic achievements” and an 'Honorary Diploma' in 2014 from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture.

Gamalova’s interpretation of Poulenc’s Violin Sonata on her first CD was described by Poulenc’s biographer Benjamin Ivry in The Yale Review Magazine (Volume 87, Issue 4, p. 171 ) as ‘the best case I have heard’ for this work.

Her recent ‘Treasured Classics’ CD, with favourite pieces for violin and her own transcriptions for viola, was highly commended by the Quarterly Review Magazine and received 5 stars from the Musical Opinion Magazine.

Her late Professor and leading violinist Grigory Zhislin (†2017) described Gamalova as "an outstanding musician who possesses an equal command of the violin and the viola. Her playing is characterised by beautiful and varied sound, excellent technical skills, cultured and disciplined musical thinking."

Alina studied at the F. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland (Masters in Arts), and The University of Arizona, USA (Masters in Music Performance).

Her appearances include The Queen’s 80^th Birthday Celebration at Balmoral Castle, Shakespeare Globe Theatre in London, National Theatre in Warsaw, Live Shows at BBC Radio 3, London Jazz Festival and the World Harp Congress in Sydney.

Alina has recorded a solo album Harp Recital and has appeared at recordings of the American harp ensemble Harp Fusion and Scottish jazz group New Focus (Whirlwind Records). Her newest album Inspiration (Ubuntu Music) was released in June 2018 and was represented at the Barbican, The Royal Albert Hall and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.

She is a winner of The PRS Women Make Music Award, and her new music sheet book Steps to Excellence is published by Creighton's Collection.

Born in Canada, clarinetist Heather Roche lives in London. Recently referred to as “The Queen of Multiphonics” and “a figurehead for contemporary music performance practice” on BBC Radio 3, she appears regularly as a soloist and chamber musician at European festivals, including the London Contemporary Music Festival, Acht Brücken (Cologne), Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik (Germany), Musica Nova (Helsinki), MusikFest (Berlin), BachFest (Leipzig), Manifeste (Paris), etc. She was a founding member the Cologne-based hand werk, and currently plays with Apartment House (London) and Mimitabu (Gothenburg). She has a longstanding duo collaboration with the German accordionist Eva Zöllner. She has also worked with the Musikfabrik (Cologne), the WDR Symphony Orchestra (Cologne), the London Symphony Orchestra, Alisios Camerata (Zagreb), and ensemble Proton (Bern), among others. She wrote her doctoral thesis at the University of Huddersfield. Her blog on writing for the clarinet attracts 90,000 viewers each year. In 2014 she was the recipient of a Danish International Visiting Artist’s stipendium. She is also reviews editor of TEMPO, published by Cambridge University Press. Her debut solo CD, Ptelea, is out on HCR/NMC, and her CD featuring the clarinet works of Christopher Fox, Headlong, appears on Métier.

Laura studied jazz and popular singing at Middlesex University and jazz singing with Nancy Marano from the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Well established on the London jazz scene, Laura has released four well-received albums, each curating fresh and classy readings of the Great American Songbook alongside unexpected pop tunes. She now collaborates with composer Martin Pyne, writing original material for her recently released EP.

She regularly runs vocal clinics and master classes and also runs Jazz vocal workshops at the City Lit. Laura has been featured in an article in the Guardian Arts Section, giving instruction in the art of jazz singing and also in the Sunday Telegraph Lifestyle section, helping someone get over their fear of singing.

Rachael worked in New York both on and off Broadway as a stage hand, set builder, and automation technician.  Since moving to London she has assisted a number of renowned artists and designers in a variety of art, theatre, and event contexts.  Her range of skills includes carpentry, metal fabrication, prop making, and installation.

In 2010 Rachael was the Royal Academy of Arts recipient for the Red Mansion Award.  In 2012 she was Camden Arts Centre’s Artist in Residence and in 2013 she won the Arts Foundation Award for Sculpture.  Her work has been reviewed by the Contemporary Arts Society, the Huffington Post, and the Guardian Guide.  Her installation work has also been included in Sculpture Now, World of Art (Thames and Hudson).

Berthe is a designer and maker for theatre, site-specific and immersive performances, art films, and community inclusive theatre and opera. Her work includes costumes for the award-winning site-responsive company dreamthinkspeak and working in the costume department for Glyndebourne Festival. Her designs for costume-based performances include collaborations with visual artists and filmmakers.

Research

Research Area: Costume theory and practice; the craft of costume design as a creative experiential practice.

Graduating from Goldsmiths’ Drama and Theatre Arts BA (Hons) course in 2019, she has since worked extensively as a Stage Manager across various London theatre venues, tours, drama schools, and festivals, including The Cockpit, Camden People’s Theatre, Theatro Technis, Mountview, Academy of Theatre Arts, Camden Fringe Festival, and the East London Shakespeare Festival.

Additionally, Emily has experience as a Sound/AV Technician and Designer. She holds an MA in Creative and Life Writing from Goldsmiths (2023).

Chloe works part time at Goldsmiths, teaching Lighting Design and providing lighting support to the Department, working particularly closely with undergraduate students in their first and second years. She is also a freelance Lighting Designer, working in theatre, dance, opera and circus within the UK and around the world.

Chloe has a first class degree in Drama from the University of Hull. In 2006 Chloe won the Michael Northern Bursary Award from the Association of Lighting Designers for showing ‘exemplary talent in lighting design'. Chloe has designed for companies including Theatre Royal Stratford East, Lyric Hammersmith, many productions for South African opera company Isango Ensemble, Upswing, Akademi, Far From The Norm, Islington Community Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, Greenwich Playhouse, Theatre Is, Pagrav Dance Company, Jane Mason, RADA, Drama Studio London, Arc Theatre, Box Clever and Quicksilver. Chloe has re-lit productions for companies including Hofesh Shechter Company, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Headlong, Graeae Theatre, Vincent Dance Theatre and English Touring Theatre. Chloe’s work has taken her throughout Europe and North America, and to South Africa, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Iran, Dubai and Singapore.

Chloe has also worked as a freelance technician in many London theatres, including The National Theatre, Sadlers Wells, Royal Court, Royal Albert Hall, Lyric Hammersmith, Hampstead Theatre, and The Place. Chloe also teaches and mentors students at Rose Bruford drama school and at the Central School of Speech and Drama. 

Nao works as lighting designer, and lighting tutor for Postgraduate students in Theatre and Performance Department, overseeing and supporting student’s projects both conceptually and technically.

She works part time at Goldsmiths and is also a freelancer.

Nao has worked extensively with many theatre companies and venues including Curious International, Kazuko Hohki, Ensemble Theatre Company, Bryony Kimmings, Split Britches, Mamoru Iriguchi, Duckie, London Bubble, SPILL Festival, Chelsea Theatre, LABAN, Barbican, BAC, CPT, Tate Modern and Serpentine Gallery as lighting designer/re-lighter/technical role. She has wide experience in national and international touring across a wide range of performance genres including theatre, dance, opera, film and music. She started working at Goldsmiths in 2009.

Nao is also a member of a Japanese performance group called Frank Chickens and has won the Foster’s “Comedy God” award in 2010. 

Patrick is a multi-disciplinary artist, musician and educator who works predominately in sound & technological, installation and performances. He has previously presented and engineered for Resonance FM and collaborated sound design and music with various dance and theatre companies in the UK and Europe including; Artangel, Juneau Projects, LOTOS Collective, Typewriters, Silversmith Dance.  He has worked/exhibited/performed in many venues and galleries including; Barbican Centre, Royal Festival Hall, Science Gallery Dublin, Kings Place, The Place Theatre and Kulturhuset Stockholm.

Patrick range of skills include, music/sound production, electronic interaction design, MAX/MSP, video projection design, video production and editing.
