Abstract
Did you hear about the insult hidden in the jacket of a prince or inside the car of a queen? Or the insult placed on the front of a City office block or outside Harrods at Christmas? How about the friendly dark skinned / Irish accented / German POW who gave a warning to a kindly English woman? Where have all these London parakeets come from and what do they signify? And who are the evil gangs stealing our dogs?

Urban legends are pieces of cultural ephemera that are also narrative demonstrations of society’s concerns, prejudices and rational blind spots. Urban legends are our contemporary folklore - coarsely humorous, cruel, bigoted and endlessly fascinating to some.

Biography
Scott Wood writes about folklore and the paranormal and its relationship with people, society and history. He is the author of London Urban Legends – The Corpse on the Tube and is a regular writer for Londonist. He is the co-founder and host of the London Fortean Society.
