Print copies in the library
A single copy of all Goldsmiths PhD (doctoral) theses are deposited in the library, in the same year that they are awarded.
All PhD theses held in the library are on the library catalogue.
- To find a specific PhD thesis, search the library catalogue for the author or title.
- To search for all the theses for a particular department or discipline, click on the 'THESES' button then type a broad subject term e.g. art history, media in the search box.
- To see a list of all doctoral theses from Goldsmiths, type THE in the basic search box on the catalogue homepage, then click on the down arrow in the 'Field to search' box and select 'Collection code'.
You can see more details about the subject of the thesis by looking at the 'FULL' record, click on the number in the column to the left of the author's name in the list of results.
Many Goldsmiths theses are available digitally, along with theses from other UK universities, and can be read online, from anywhere, you may find this the most convenient way to access them.
If you do want to consult the printed version, when you have identified the thesis or theses that you would like to read, please write down the author and title. These copies are available for reference in the Special Collections and post-graduate reading room, on request, Monday - Friday 9.15 - 17.00, or from the Library Enquiry desk or Helpdesk in the evenings and at weekends. These times will not apply if library access is restricted. See the opening times.
Printed theses are for reference only, because they are unique. Most may be photocopied, but check the coversheet inside as that will tell you what permission the author has given for copying.
Please note that University of London theses were held at Senate House Library until 2010, but were then transferred back to the home institution so there are no print copies of Goldsmiths theses held at Senate House Library.
Digital copies in GRO and EThOS
Digital copies of many Goldsmiths PhD (doctoral) theses are available from two sources:
- Goldsmiths Research Online (GRO). Any thesis with a PDF icon beside it is downloadable.
- EThOS, the British Library's collection of UK theses.
Theses completed on or after 1 June 2010 are collected in Goldsmiths Research Online (GRO) and also made available in the British Library's EThOS service, when this is possible. Copyright restrictions mean that it is not possible to make all theses available in GRO or EThOS.
Theses from before 2010, originally deposited in Senate House Library, which are not yet available digitally may usually be requested from EThOS. You will need to register with EThOS to make a digitisation request, but there is no charge for requesting a digital copy of Goldsmiths theses, because Goldsmiths is an open access sponsor of EThOS.
Some theses completed before 2010 are available in Goldsmiths Research Online. If you completed your thesis at Goldsmiths before 2010, we hope you will agree to a digital copy being made. Please contact the Goldsmiths Research Online team on gro (@gold.ac.uk), if you would like to know more about digital theses.
