Learning
Become part of a world-class community to create, curate, and write about art in an experimental, interdisciplinary, and dynamic environment.
Creating lively exchanges and collaborations between students, tutors, workshop leaders, visiting tutors, early career researchers, curators, critics, and writers, we believe that theory and practice go hand in hand.
Teaching is tailored around your project ideas, guiding you to develop concepts with your tutors while introducing innovative techniques and approaches.
Our expert staff, all of whom are practising artists, writers or curators with extensive professional and teaching experience, support and inspire your creative journey.
All students are given a dedicated studio space, with specialist Art Practice Areas available to support a wide range of processes, from 3D printing, to ceramics, to textiles, to casting, and more.
The Art Practice Areas (APAs) provide eleven cutting-edge workshops and facilities, enabling you to explore and expand your practice across diverse mediums.
Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA)
Goldsmiths CCA is a free public art gallery bringing world-class exhibitions to south London.
Housed in a former Victorian bath house redesigned by Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble, the gallery continues Goldsmiths’ world-renowned legacy in art practice. It serves as a vibrant space for creativity and debate, open to students, artists, academics, and the wider public.
Goldsmiths CCA presents both national and international artists, projects, and residencies, alongside a dynamic programme of talks, performances, film screenings, and events linked to its exhibitions.
Library and archives
We have excellent resources for research and teaching, ranging from the Art Writing Collection and the Zines Collection in the Library to various personal papers and unusual materials in Special Collections, such as the Women's Art Library, Goldsmiths for Palestine, Daphne Oram, Nimarkoh Indent Archive, Women's Revolutions per Minute, and the Textiles Collection.
Goldsmiths School of Art forms an important part of London’s dynamic art world, and the subject's reputation enables us to maintain links with prestigious institutions and universities internationally. The thriving intellectual, creative, and inclusive culture of the subject continues to provide numerous opportunities for students and staff to develop cross-cultural collaborations within and beyond the field of art and visual culture.
Students can boost their research skills and CV with GRIP, a six-week summer programme giving undergraduates hands-on experience in academic research between their second and final year.
The Schools Studio Programme
The Schools Studio Programme provides mentorship by Goldsmiths BA Fine Art and BA Fine Art & History of Art students to 16-18 year olds in local schools and colleges.
We are proud to exhibit wide-ranging contributions to contemporary art, from artistic and curatorial interventions to symposia, socially engaged practices, reading groups, public outreach, and publishing.
Exhibitions Hub
Launched in 2019, the Goldsmiths Exhibitions Hub is a dedicated resource for current students and alumni of the School of Art at Goldsmiths. It provides guidance and advice to help turn ideas for public-facing projects into reality.
The Hub supports students and alumni to host exhibitions. Supporting with planning, funding, and technical needs, so you can develop self-initiated projects beyond your programme of study.
Degree Shows
Each summer, our Art Degree Shows showcase the creativity and boldness of graduating students. The exhibitions span a wide range of practices, including installation, painting, sculpture, sound, performance, photography, textiles, digital media, socially engaged practices, writing, and work that does not fit any medium-specific markers.
The degree shows mark a significant milestone, giving students the opportunity to present their work publicly, engage in critical dialogue, and connect with peers, industry professionals, and the wider community.
Each year, the Art Department celebrates exceptional student achievement through a range of awards and prizes. These recognise outstanding final exhibitions, dissertations, and creative practice, while offering opportunities such as residencies in Hamburg, Vienna, and Lewisham Arthouse, or travel support through the Nicholas and Andrei Tooth Scholarship. The Christine Risley Award, in turn, is a cash prize awarded by the Goldsmiths Textile Collection & Constance Howard Gallery to a graduating Goldsmiths student for outstanding work relating to textiles, in memory of Christine Risley.
Awards help students gain exposure, develop their practice, and launch their careers.
Many graduates have gone on to become successful practising artists and arts professionals after finishing their studies with us, winning major prizes and exhibiting around the world. The Turner Prize shortlist has included many of our graduates and staff over the years.

Research
Research carried out by staff in the department is both individual and collective, often produced in collaboration with galleries and museums, working in London’s cosmopolitan contemporary art world as well as exhibiting internationally.
Our MPhil/PhD Art is a 3-4 year (full-time) or 6-8 year (part-time) research project, the pursuit of which may involve your already-established practice or may require the development of new modes of practice specific to the project.
