Learning

Our teaching is led by researchers and artists who bring expert insight and practical experience into the studio.

You will be taught in a range of learning contexts, including practical workshops, seminars, lectures, small group tutorials, student-led workshops and both supervised and independent rehearsals.

You’ll learn from our dedicated staff team of practitioner-researchers, academics and technicians with expert knowledge of specific fields and topics within theatre, music and performance.

Student-led practice is fundamental to your development as a critically rigorous, reflective practitioner who has the vocabulary and skills to make and reflect on your chosen practice.

We recognise the importance of supporting students’ learning with high quality teaching that is responsive to your individual and collective needs, and we have designed our programmes to be as accessible as possible to all students.

We offer state-of-the-art rehearsal, recording and performance spaces, including our own music studios, theatre and workshops.

You will have access to our media lab which features a bespoke sound recording booth and video and sound editing facilities. You will also benefit from our costume workshop, equipped with industrial and domestic sewing machines and steam irons, fabric cutting table, and dressmaking stands. Our extensive furniture, prop and costume stores covering a range of materials, objects, and styles from the late 19th, 20th and 21st century.

George Wood Theatre

Seating up to 140, the George Wood Theatre offers natural daylight or full stage lighting, plus advanced sound and projection facilities. A tension wire grid enables dynamic effects, while accessible features include dressing rooms, hearing loops, and wheelchair access. Two additional studios provide fully equipped spaces for rehearsal and performance.

Electronic Music Studios

The Stanley Glasser Electronic Music Studio was established in 1968 by composer, instrument maker, and musicologist Hugh Davies. Since this time, it has grown to comprise a collection of industry standard working areas for undergraduate & postgraduate students wishing to explore the creative potential of studio equipment & audio software in relation to composition, live electronics, interactive performance, sound-art, phonography, spatial sound, acoustic ecology and sonic research.

Goldsmiths Music Studies

Designed to optimise acoustic and electronic sound reproduction, Goldsmiths Music Studios opened in 2013.

Consisting of three large recording spaces with natural light and variable acoustics, the studios feature a large collection of new and vintage microphones, amplifiers, synthesisers, and outboard, supporting both analogue and digital recording. See our full list of equipment

NX Records

NX Records is a music label founded as a collaboration between Goldsmiths and Matthew Herbert's ever-experimental Accidental Records.

The label has continued to grow, releasing critically acclaimed music by Goldsmiths students and graduates as part of the NX Mixtape, whilst hosting numerous workshops, events, and running a pop up record shop in New Cross.

In addition, all students have access to specialist software, online learning platforms, and dedicated support for developing digital and entrepreneurial skills. Campus-wide services, including the Library, Careers Service, and Goldsmiths' Digital Studios, provide additional training and resources for content production and communication.

Our graduates take leading roles in the cultural and creative industries, whether as artists and performers, writers and teachers, or producers and artistic directors.

At Goldsmiths, you’ll immerse yourself in a subject you love within a welcoming and creative campus community.

Based in South East London, our vibrant setting connects you directly to the capital’s business, technology, and cultural networks. Your learning goes far beyond the classroom through partnerships, guest lectures, and real-world industry experience.

You’ll be supported by inspiring academics, dedicated staff, and fellow students who are passionate about making a difference. And because we’re in London – ranked the world’s number one student city (QS Best Student Cities 2025) – you’ll benefit from our close links with some of the capital’s leading creative and cultural organisations.

Research

At Goldsmiths, research in Music, Theatre and Performance brings together creative practice and critical scholarship in ways that push at disciplinary boundaries.

Researchers across the subjects explore how sound, performance and technology intersect and examine the social and cultural processes that emerge through music, theatre and live art.

Collaboration and interdisciplinarity are at the heart of this work, with researchers experimenting with new forms of writing, practice-research and performance to create rigorous and imaginative research environments.
