Colombian community in London

Colombians constitute the UK's second largest Latin American group, and on a global scale the community ranks as the world's fourth largest overseas Colombian population. The Colombian-born population was 12,331 according to the 2001 UK Census, although unofficial estimates now place the total number of people of Colombian ancestry at between 90,000 and 160,000.

The overwhelming majority of Colombians in the UK live in London, although within the capital they are fairly well dispersed. Despite this, the largest numbers can be found in the boroughs of Islington and Camden as well as Lambeth and Southwark - both near Goldsmiths.  Indeed, the local areas of Old Kent Road, Camberwell, Brixton, Peckham, Kennington, Stockwell, Clapham, Oval and Elephant & Castle have many Colombian residents and businesses, including nightclubs, shops, restaurants, cafes, travel agencies and a church in Stockwell.

There is also a significant presence of Colombian media in the UK, consisting mainly of a few newspapers and radio stations.  A similarity between Colombia and the UK is that football is an extremely popular sport in both countries; this easily helps link communities and today many Colombians play in the Latin American leagues of London as well as for local teams.  Besides Colombian football and music in the UK, the other aspect that contributes to the culture of Colombians in the UK is food.

Sancocho has become popular in mainstream London and to an extent British culture.

La Mazorca (384 Brixton Road, SW9 7AW) is a lively Colombian restaurant which gets packed with jovial South Americans on a nightly basis.

Saturday nights at the nightclub Chaney in the Elephant & Castle areas is said to be like being in Cali and this areas hosts a number of Colombian businesses, so if you want to buy clothes have your hair cut or have a drink before going clubbing then go to the shopping centres in Elephant & Castle (La Vida Loca, San Andresito, Shampoo).

Seven Sisters Market: London's Largest Latin American Market

Whilst there is no true "barrio latino" in London in the way there is in Los Angeles, perhaps Seven Sisters market is the largest Latin American market in Britain.  Saturdays are an ideal day to visit for a blast of Latin culture and food.

For more information regarding Colombian shops and restaurants, entertainment, places of worship and other useful details, please visit the Colombian London section of the Visit London website.
