Learning

We encourage you to find and use your voice. We inspire curiosity, challenge orthodoxies, and confound expectations.

Our internationally renowned, award-winning research directly informs our teaching and sparks conversations both inside and outside the classroom. History and politics matter in understanding current affairs. Through our teaching, we'll equip you with the skills and tools to think critically about the world today.

We organise workshops that feature keynote speakers, book launches, and seminars addressing current challenges affecting the economy and society, including climate change, inequality, financial behaviour, creativity across humans and machines, and structural change. Invited speakers include scholars from national and international institutions, with representation from the Global South.

Well-known international academics who have delivered keynote addresses in the past include Anwar Shaikh, Geoff Harcourt, Nancy Cartwright, Roberto Scazzieri, Philippe van Parijs, and Zhifu Mi, among others.

Pluralism in our programmes is further reinforced through public-facing events such as roundtables and panels featuring scholars from diverse fields and perspectives. Economics lecturers have also developed an extensive, publicly available resource based on interview projects with celebrated economists and social scientists, including Ha-Joon Chang, Sheila Dow, Anwar Shaikh, Jayati Ghosh, Geoff Harcourt, Tony Lawson, K. Vela Velupillai, Charles Goodhart, and Julie Nelson.

Innovative student-focused events such as topic-specific film screenings with discussions (for example, on the 2007-2008 global financial crisis), walking tours in London exploring the history of key figures in political economy, and guest lectures by industry experts are integrated into the teaching of several modules across our programmes.

Our modules are designed to equip you with the skills and tools you need, while providing opportunities to gain valuable real-world experience. One example is our ‘work placement’ module, which allows you to learn from, and work alongside relevant experts. Past placements have included historical archives, museums, Parliament, a foreign embassy, leading think tanks, and major global banks. Notably, a former student who completed this module was elected to Parliament in 2024.

We also host regular ‘study-into-work’ events featuring numerous guest speakers and collaborate closely with Goldsmiths’ excellent Careers Service to provide ongoing opportunities for professional development.

You'll have access to specialist software, online learning platforms, and dedicated support for developing digital and entrepreneurial skills. Campus-wide services, including the Careers Service, and Goldsmiths’ Digital Studios, provide additional training and resources for content production and communication.

At Goldsmiths, you’ll immerse yourself in a subject you love within a welcoming and creative campus community.

Based in South East London, our vibrant setting connects you directly to the capital’s business, technology, and cultural networks. Your learning goes far beyond the classroom through partnerships, guest lectures, and real-world industry experience.

You’ll be supported by inspiring academics, dedicated staff, and fellow students who are passionate about making a difference. And because we’re in London – ranked the world’s number one student city (QS Best Student Cities 2025) – you’ll benefit from our close links with some of the capital’s leading creative and cultural organisations.

Research

Our research at Goldsmiths in History, Politics and International Relations extends beyond the traditional boundaries of their disciplines.

Politics and International Relations

We have notable strengths in three specific areas, which form our major research clusters: Reconfiguring the International, Critical Political Economy, and Political Theory. We also have distinct interests in culture and politics. This means that, as well as hosting expertise in mainstream fields such as International Politics, European Politics, and British Politics, we explore topics outside the parameters of political research found elsewhere.

We are a vibrant and growing community of researchers exploring post-colonial and international politics and theory, with a particular focus on Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Our work also spans non-orthodox political economy and radical political theory. We draw on a wide range of research methods, including empirical analysis and data collection, textual and discourse analysis, hermeneutic and philosophical inquiry, and the study of both historical and contemporary cultures and societies. Through these diverse approaches, we generate critical and original insights that enrich our research.

History

We push the boundaries of what ‘history’ means. We do that this through the novel subjects we focus on, our innovative approaches, the sources we use, and the ways in which we engage with the public.

History at Goldsmiths is internationally leading. Our staff win major international prizes and lead research projects which have global scope and significance. Our work is interdisciplinary, and our geographic scope has a broad reach.

We have particular strengths in the following research clusters: global history, military history, political history, Black British history and histories of the body.

Our research profile makes us distinctive. In recognition of this, we have received awards from the ESRC, the AHRC, the Leverhulme Trust, the Wellcome Trust, and the British Academy, as well as PhD funding from the ESRC and CHASE.
