Goldsmiths graduate Sylvie Carlos has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship
Now studying for a PhD, Sylvie Carlos has received an All-Disciplines Postgraduate Fulbright Award enabling her to research and lecture at the University of Maryland. Building on her postgraduate research which explores how the British audio industry engages with Black audiences across the UK, the Fulbright award will see Sylvie also explore how British podcasts centring on Black experiences resonate with American audiences.
Sylvie said, “When I received the Fulbright, I screamed because I recognised the impact! Once it sunk in, I felt honoured and really excited!
“As a researcher and producer who has spent years working in and studying the UK audio industry, I’m excited to explore how Black experiences are represented in audio storytelling globally. I’m particularly interested in how British podcasts land with U.S. audiences, and what that reveals about the cultural exchange of Black stories across the Atlantic.”
I hope this opportunity will deepen my research, expand transatlantic conversations around race, media, and representation, and help me grow as both a scholar and a creative.

“I aim to build connections with audio-makers, academics, whilst soaking up the cultural life of the U.S.,” she added.
Alongside her academic work, Sylvie has over a decade of experience in the media industry as a multi-award-winning producer working across podcasts and radio.
The US-UK Fulbright Commission is the only academic awards programme that operates on both sides of the Atlantic, providing grants for postgraduate study, research, and teaching. It works to advance knowledge, promote civic engagement and develop compassionate leaders.
