Safeguarding, trauma-informed practice, social work workforce, digital technologies (social media, AI)

I am a registered social worker with Social Work England and currently a Lecturer in Social Work at Goldsmiths. My academic work is informed by previous experience in children and families social work, including leadership roles within local authority settings. Since joining Goldsmiths in 2017, I’ve had the privilege of convening both undergraduate (BA Social Work) and postgraduate programmes (Step Up to Social Work and MA Social Work).
My research is driven by a commitment to improving practice and achieving better outcomes for children and families. I’m particularly interested in trauma-informed and compassionate approaches, workforce development, inter-professional learning, and the role of digital technologies in shaping the future of social work.

Academic qualifications

  • PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education 2019
  • Fellow of Advance HE 2019
  • MA Advanced Social Work Practice (Professional Leadership) 2017
  • Social Work Practice Educator Professional Standards (Stage 1 and 2) 2011
  • Post-Qualifying Award in Social Work 2007
  • BA in Social Work 2002

Teaching and supervision

I teach across all social work programmes at Goldsmiths and have experience convening both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. My teaching portfolio includes modules such as Social Work Skills and Methods, Introduction to Law, and Introduction to Social Work. I enjoy integrating practice-based learning, digital tools, and flipped classroom models to make learning engaging and relevant.
I’ve supervised numerous extended essays and dissertations and supported postgraduate research projects, including collaborative projects with local authorities. As a personal tutor, I focus on supporting students’ academic and practice development, with particular attention to wellbeing and resilience.
I also facilitate reflective practice groups using the Intervision model, creating spaces for collaborative learning and critical reflection among students and practitioners.

Research interests

My research explores trauma-informed and compassionate practice, social work education, workforce development, inter-professional learning, multi-disciplinary collaboration, and the impact of digital technologies on social work practice. I’m especially interested in research that leads to tangible improvements in practice and better outcomes for children and families.
Currently, I’m part of an NIHR-funded project aimed at equipping social workers to better support autistic older adults - https://sites.gold.ac.uk/coast-study/. I also work on a project with social workers, clinical psychologists and Children’s Guardian developing a multi-agency approach to address trauma for children entering care. This project has produced practice guidance and training materials. This work was featured by Research in Practice https://tinyurl.com/CCIOCSW and presented at international conferences.
I’m a member of the European Social Work Research Association. My work is practice-oriented, often conducted in collaboration with local authorities and practitioners, with the aim of generating real-world impact.
