Learning

Through hands-on learning, collaborative projects and reflective practice, our programmes help you discover more about yourself and others while developing the skills to become a professional practitioner in your chosen field. Graduates go on to work as social workers, therapists, and youth and community workers across London, the UK, and internationally.

You'll have access to specialist software, online learning platforms, and dedicated support for developing digital and entrepreneurial skills. Campus-wide services, including the Library, Careers Service, and Goldsmiths’ Digital Studios, provide additional training and resources for content production and communication.

Our staff and students are connected to a range of community organisations across our disciplines through their research or placements. We have a broad range of networks, including:

Our social work programmes equip you with the knowledge, values, and skills to practice as a reflective and ethical social worker. All our qualifying programmes are approved by Social Work England.

Our youth and community work programmes prepare you to make a difference in complex community settings. You will learn to engage and intervene creatively using the arts and to connect with and support communities.

In our therapies programmes, professional training helps you become a skilled and reflective practitioner while critically engaging with evidence-based approaches and research to guide your practice.

At Goldsmiths, you’ll immerse yourself in a subject you love within a welcoming and creative campus community.

Based in South East London, our vibrant setting connects you directly to the capital’s business, technology, and cultural networks. Your learning goes far beyond the classroom through partnerships, guest lectures, and real-world industry experience.

You’ll be supported by inspiring academics, dedicated staff, and fellow students who are passionate about making a difference. And because we’re in London – ranked the world’s number one student city (QS Best Student Cities 2025) – you’ll benefit from our close links with some of the capital’s leading creative and cultural organisations.

Research

This subject area draws on research synergies between three inter-related areas: Social WorkCommunity and Youth Work, and a range of therapeutic disciplines.

These areas draw variously on sociology, social policy, psychosocial studies, politics, community development, cultural studies, death studies, counselling and psychology.

Research and knowledge paradigms are used creatively across and between areas to provide dynamic, change-oriented research. The subject area also has an internationally leading specialism in contemporary religion and belief in the public sphere.

This has pioneered the fast-growing area of religious literacy, emphasising the interface, not between people of different faiths, but between a secular-minded public sphere and a religiously diverse public. Furthermore, research staff in this subject area are internationally recognised for their work and impact on anti-oppressive practice, as well as thanatology (death studies)
