What hope is there for young women from the threat of radicalisation and FGM? How does Nawal El Saadawi use creative writing to generate hope for women around the world?

Goldsmiths welcomes international activist and renowned writer Dr Nawal El Saadawi to speak about ‘Women, Dissidence and Hope’, issues that have fuelled her writing and campaigning for more than sixty years.

Dr Nawal El Saadawi is an Egyptian Muslim feminist writer, activist, physician and psychiatrist. She has written over forty books on women in Islam and the practice of FGM, and has braved prison, exile and death threats in her fight against female oppression.

Nawal El Saadawi said:

“The biggest threat to women today is the unholy military alliance between the American-European-Israeli neo-colonial powers, and the Islamic fanatic groups who are using religion to divide countries and create conflicts. There is hope for women involved in conflict around the world, but they must come together to gain political power and unveil their minds to gain the power of knowledge.”

Aligning creativity and dissidence to fight against oppression, Dr El Saadawi embodies the thinking behind Goldsmiths’ MA Black British Writing.

Dr Deirdre Osborne, co-convener MA Black British Writing said: “Creativity is at the core of Dr El Saadawi's ethics, publications and questioning of patriarchal authority and speaks directly to our own values here at Goldsmiths of creativity and criticality. This has earned her an enduring and respected stature worldwide, as a woman for our times.”
