Statement of support over situation in Iran

Article

Published on 7 Oct 2022

On behalf of Goldsmiths, the Warden Professor Frances Corner OBE has shared this statement of support over the situation in Iran.

“We support all those in Iran who are protesting the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, and the death of Nika Shakarami, and recognise the leading role being played by students and staff at the country’s universities. Goldsmiths shares the protestors’ belief in equity and social justice and we applaud their brave actions.

“These groups are rightly taking a peaceful stand against the long-term oppression of women and denial of women’s rights in the country and we join with the international community in condemning any violence or injustices the Iranian authorities take in response.

“We value deeply the contribution our Iranian students, staff and partners make to Goldsmiths and understand this may be a difficult time for them and their families. Support is available from the College for students and staff. We will continue to monitor the situation and will respond accordingly.”
