Marlowe Granados

Goldsmiths honed my craft in a particular way that I would never have experienced otherwise. I was enthusiastically supported by my supervisors.

A varied degree

I enjoyed the breadth of material we explored in class, especially exploring the canon through a critical lens. My favourite class was literature and film which compared film adaptations to their source texts.

A supportive environment

The Department of English was lovely because it had a nice mix of academics and writers, while also the students were made up of those who enjoyed literature and were dipping their toes, while others were more pointed towards being working writers.

Goldsmiths really honed my craft in a particular way that I would never have experienced otherwise. I was enthusiastically supported by my supervisors.

Making friends

I had already lived in London for a few years prior to Goldsmiths, and had established a strong social circle in London already. Coming into Goldsmiths being a couple of years older than my peers, I didn't look to my experience for friendships but was happily surprised. I made two of my great friends in my creative writing class and have been friends with them ever since that first month at school.

Life after Goldsmiths

I'm the author of Happy Hour, a novel the New York Times called “confident, charismatic and alive to the pleasure of observation.” In 2021, it was shortlisted for the Amazon First Novel award and received starred reviews from Publisher's Weekly and Kirkus Review.

My work has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, The Cut, The Baffler, The Guardian, and more.

I currently write a substack called "From the Desk of Marlowe Granados" and am at work on my second novel.

Advice for future students

Don't get too overwhelmed with the workload, gravitate towards the literature that stimulates you and that you are interested in unravelling. Have fun with it!

A social place

I loved being able to hang out with my friends nearby at the local pubs and restaurants after a day of classes. The social aspect was really fun and lively.
