Academic theory connected with real-world practice
I thoroughly enjoyed the MA Understanding Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse at Goldsmiths.
The course was incredibly insightful, well-structured, and truly innovative in how it connected academic theory with real-world practice.
It gave me the tools to not only deepen my understanding of complex safeguarding issues but also empowered me to turn that knowledge into meaningful action.
A city full of inspiration
My favourite part of studying in London was being surrounded by so much diversity — not just culturally, but in thought, experience, and passion.
London gave me access to people from all walks of life, and that really enriched my learning, especially in a subject as complex and nuanced as domestic violence and sexual abuse.
Being in such a vibrant, fast-paced city meant I was constantly inspired — whether through local community projects, grassroots activism, or just hearing different perspectives in class.
London made me feel like anything was possible, and that energy definitely contributed to my decision to start my own community interest company after graduating.
Life after Goldsmiths
Since completing the programme in 2023, I went on to establish The Nursing Lounge CIC, a community interest company that provides trauma-informed support, donations, and practical resources for women and children affected by domestic abuse and hardship.
In addition to running my CIC, I currently work as a school nurse. I support children with safeguarding needs and work closely with families and professionals to ensure vulnerable young people receive the care and protection they deserve.
This course gave me the confidence and knowledge to create change both within the community and within professional settings.
I highly recommend it to anyone passionate about tackling domestic violence and creating safe, supportive environments for others.
I’d love for students to check out The Nursing Lounge’s pages and see what can be achieved with the foundation this course provides.

Advice for future students
My biggest piece of advice is: trust that what you’re learning has real-world value, even when it feels overwhelming or emotionally heavy. This field isn’t easy, but your insight, compassion, and voice are needed more than ever.
Stay open to learning beyond the academic material — listen to real stories, reflect on your own biases, and allow the discomfort to shape your understanding.
Don’t be afraid to challenge systems or create your own path if you don’t see one that fits. You’re not limited to traditional roles — this course can equip you to do community work, advocacy, policy change, or even launch your own initiatives.
Lastly, stay connected to your “why” — the reason you chose this course in the first place. That motivation will carry you through the challenging days and push you to use what you’ve learned to make a real difference.
You’ve got this — and the world needs more people like you in this space.
