Global Ethnic Majority English Scholar's Fee Waiver

There is a dramatic under-representation of Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) literary studies scholars at the academic professional level. The same is true throughout British academia. This full-tuition fee-waiver scholarship for a place on our MA Creative & Life Writing or MA Critical and Creative Studies in Literature programme supports a student who intends to progress through postgraduate study and into an academic position.

Like all our students, the successful candidate will benefit from the School of Music, English and Theatre’s open, innovative, and supportive environment.

They will also receive support from the Goldsmiths Careers Service and will be offered extensive support in developing and completing an application towards fully funded PhD study.

Eligibility criteria

The fee waiver is open to Home applicants identifying as belonging to the global ethnic majority.

To be eligible for this award, you must 1) hold an offer (conditional or unconditional) for either the MA Creative & Life Writing or MA Critical and Creative Studies in Literature programme, and 2) not be in receipt of any other Goldsmiths award or scholarship.

Application deadlines

Once an offer of a programme place has been made, candidates can apply for the scholarship.   

The deadline for application to the scholarship is 9am on 12 July 2027.  

Please note that it can take several weeks for programme applications to be processed and for places to be offered, and no late scholarship applications can be accepted. Candidates should indicate at the point of programme application that they also intend to be considered for the scholarship.

How to apply

Once an offer of a place has been made (conditional or unconditional), candidates can apply for the scholarship. 

To apply for the scholarship you will need to submit: 

• A 300-word statement describing the broad areas of interest and research that you intend to explore during your masters programme, and subsequently at MPhil/PhD level study and professional academic level. This statement will not itself be formally evaluated, but it will function as an overview of your interests and potential path into the academic profession.
• If you are applying for a scholarship for the MA Creative & Life Writing, please resubmit the same portfolio of your creative writing that accompanied your original application to the programme, along with a critical commentary (300-500 words) on your portfolio.
• If you are applying for a scholarship for the MA in Critical and Creative Studies in Literature, please submit a sample of literary-critical (or related) work of approximately 2500 words. This could be the same sample submitted with your original application for the programme, and it can be drawn from your undergraduate studies.

Selection process

Applications will be reviewed and the award made by a panel including Global Ethnic Majority academics associated with the School of Music, English and Theatre.
