A member of parliament with an esteemed history in education, Estelle Morris was awarded an honorary fellowship from Goldsmiths in 2018.

Like a stick of rock, the word ‘education’ runs through Estelle Morris. After 18 years teaching at a comprehensive in Coventry, Estelle entered Parliament in 1992.

She became a minister in the Department for Education and Employment in 1997 and then Secretary of State for Education and Skills in 2001. She was the first former comprehensive school teacher to have the position. In 2003, she became a Minister at the Department of Culture Media and Sport, a role she held for two years.

In 2005, she was awarded a Life Peerage and became a member of the House of Lords, where she sits as Baroness Morris of Yardley.

Goldsmiths is proud to have had Estelle as its Chair of Council, providing leadership and inspiration to the College, for six years, from 2012 to 2018.
