The new Master of Research in Art is a one-year postgraduate research programme designed and led by artists. It is aimed at artists and writers working in the visual arts who want to undertake a long-term research project grounded in their own practice. Students will have access to its three research centres: the Drawing Centre for Humans and Machines; the Centre for Art and Ecology and the Choreographic Research Unit.
They will receive dedicated studio space appropriate to their needs, access to our world class workshops as well as individual and group tuition guided by our commitment to student-centred teaching. Practitioners from different media - painters, writers, performance artists, ceramicists and sculptors - will work together to develop cross-disciplinary thinking and collaborative projects. There will be opportunities to create exhibitions, experimental publishing projects, artists' books and curatorial activities.
The MRes is comprised of three elements: Art Research Practice, Art Research Methods and Art Research Proposal Writing.
Key aspects of the course:
- The course will use fine art pedagogy to teach research skills, exploring art-making itself as a research method
- Students will explore their own research methods and apply these to the art they make
- Students will learn to write their own long-term research and arts council funding applications, preparing them for the next step towards a research career
- Students will participate in exhibitions over the year-long course, culminating in the Postgraduate Degree Show on campus in the summer
Dr Joseph Noonan-Ganley, artist and Programme Leader, says: "We in the School of Art are excited to offer this studio-based Master of Research, which we have been developing over the past 18 months."
It will afford students working across all media a year to immerse themselves in a body of contemporary art research practice, leading to plans and applications for a long-term project.

"Working alongside each other to develop their own methods of inquiry and apply these to their practices, students will learn about art as research in itself and be prepared to pursue this as a career beyond a university setting,” he added.
This programme reflects the best of art education: artist-led, research-driven and committed to creating new knowledge through creative practice. It combines all that we do best at Goldsmiths.
