Alessia Arcuri's MPhil/PhD Art research project
Somatic Publishing
This PhD brings together the notions of ‘somatic’ (body-centered experiences) and ‘publishing’ (the materialisation and distribution of knowledges) to shift the focus from the body as an ‘archive’ of histories and habits and towards the body in its capacity to generate and share such knowledges.
Working with new materialist and feminist notions such as ‘entanglement’ and ‘intra-action’, this PhD explores how group workshops can generate different somatic modes of attention and these can affect participants’ responses to textual objects.
By surveying how text operates not only cognitively, but also affectively and sensorially, the PhD engages with queer, feminist and decolonial practices that have long interrogated how language has been separated from corporeal experience, and it considers both bodies and language as co-produced and co-constituted.
