Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), founded in 1954, is one of Indonesia’s leading state universities with deep roots in teacher education. Originally established as a teacher training college, UM has developed into a broad, research-active university known for its focus on education, learning innovation and community engagement. The university hosts a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and maintains an active research profile across the humanities, social sciences, and STEM disciplines. UM’s strong research output and applied focus support its role as a national centre for learning innovation.
UM’s postgraduate provision includes a well-established Master of Educational Technology which emphasises the design, development and evaluation of learning technologies and pedagogies. The programme trains educational practitioners and researchers to apply evidence-based approaches to learning innovation, leading development in institutional and community settings.
Overview of Partnership
Goldsmiths and Universitas Negeri Malang have established a dual-degree partnership that provides a focused international progression route in educational design and technology. Under the agreement, students who complete Year 1 of the Master of Educational Technology at UM will be eligible to progress into the MA Designing Education at Goldsmiths. Upon successful completion of the Goldsmiths year, students transfer the credits to UM and receive degrees from both Universitas Negeri Malang and Goldsmiths.
This dual model combines UM’s applied expertise in educational technology with Goldsmiths’ strengths in creative pedagogies and design-led approaches to learning. It offers students international exposure, hands-on learning, and a jointly recognised qualification that supports careers in design, education, and technology.
