Attending university is a big decision, and it's understandable if you're feeling nervous about starting a degree after taking a year out. But there are so many benefits to attending university – from increased career prospects to a broader social life.

What you could do at university

  • Immerse yourself in a subject you love, with like-minded classmates and expert teaching, helping to increase your subject knowledge and skills.
  • Make new friends from all over the world, or even make contacts for your future career.
  • Establish your independence and identity away from home – university can be a defining moment in your life.
  • Achieve your goals at university. And whether it's via an academic project or extra-curricular activity, you are likely to increase your confidence.
  • Learn skills beyond your subject, such as time management, communication, prioritisation and teamwork, all of which will be highly useful for you in the future.
  • Boost your career prospects. Graduates are more likely to be in employment than non-graduates (87.5% compared to 72.0%), and more likely to be in high-skilled roles (65.6% compared to 23.9%). In 2019, the median graduate salary (£34,000) was £9,000 more than the median non-graduate salary (£25,000) (Graduate Labour Market Statistics 2019)
  • If you want to launch your own business, our Careers Service has support and advisors in place to help you. You may even meet your future collaborators!

It has been a transformative two years for me since starting here in every respect. I've become entirely more outgoing, and my confidence in tricky skills like public speaking has hugely improved.
