Research interests

My main research area is differential psychology or individual differences, which is the study of how and why people differ. More specifically, I am interested in personality traits (including psychopathology or abnormal psychology), cognitive abilities (including emotional and social competence), leadership, and creativity.

Since obtaining my PhD at UCL in 2003, my work has focused on the the development of a comprehensive framework to conceptualise and understand intellectual competence, that is, why some people have a greater potential for future achievement than others. This question should be addressed with the concept of IQ, but also looking at personality, motivation, creativity, and interests. Indeed, whilst intelligence may provide an indication of what a person can do, non-ability traits, such as personality, motivation and interests, may tell us what a person will actually do.

Another area of interest of mine is the psychology of musical preferences, in particular, understanding what individual difference factors determine how, when and why people listen to music, as well as what types of music different people prefer and why. This research indicates that personality and intelligence play an important role shaping our musical preferences and interests, as well as the way we experience and perceive music. For instance, Neuroticism (low Emotional Stability) explains whether we use music for emotional regulation, whilst Openness (high Intellect) determines whether we use music to stimulate our intellect.

My research also explores artistic preferences (notably for visual art), and recently I have started to investigate the psychology of film/movie preferences.

Finally, I am also interested in consumer-behaviour with particular emphasis on profiling consumers. Work in this area suggests that individual differences are robust predictors of consumer-related preferences and behaviours, including people's attitudes to money (e.g., saving, lending, borrowing, and spending), their product and brand preferences. These findings have important implications for marketing, advertising and consumer finance.

Other areas of expertise/research include: Body language (nonverbal communication), entrepreneurship, work psychology, psychometrics, job satisfaction, engagement, machiavellianism, environmental concerns, celebrity worship, intuition, and learning styles.
