Eligibility criteria

The aim of the FWA bursary is to encourage those students who come from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the industry. In particular those from a lower socio-economic background, BAME, LGBTQ+ and those with disabilities.

The £5,000 bursary will be split between a grant of £4,000 towards tuition fees and a fund of up to £1,000 administered by the FWA for living fees/equipment/expenses.

  • The successful candidate will also become a full FWA member  
  • The successful candidate will receive mentorship from a senior FWA member and advice on career advancement 
  • The successful candidate will also be given paid work placement with the Football Manager Video Game at a mutually convenient time.

Applications for FWA bursary are open to students on any MCCS journalism programme, either incoming 2nd or 3rd year Undergraduate or Postgraduate students who have confirmed acceptance of their offers. See below for a full list of eligible programmes.

What your application should contain: 

  • Your name, programme and, if applicable, year of study. 
  • A statement of no more than 400 words why you believe you qualify for this bursary in line with the criteria and explaining how it would help in your studies and your future journalism career.  
  • One or more examples should be attached of your sports writing or broadcasting – ideally about football and something that has been published in the media, in a blog or has been broadcast in any way. If you are submitting more than one example, please use a ZIP file. 

Selection process

A shortlist of applicants will be drawn up and those on the shortlist will be invited to a brief interview to decide the final recipient.
