How Goldsmiths keeps students safe
December 2025
Students may know that members of our community have been victims of crime recently in New Cross, alongside other incidents not connected in any way to Goldsmiths. We know this is causing concern and this page sets out the action Goldsmiths is taking to help keep our students safe in the local area.
What we’re doing
- We are increasing security in and around our campus, including putting in place a security guard at the Caroline Graveson Building during opening hours
- Goldsmiths’ security team is working with the Metropolitan Police who are investigating the increase in incidents
- The police are increasing patrols in the area including uniformed and plain-clothes officers
- Goldsmiths has 24-hour security coverage, seven days a week. Officers are based in the Richard Hoggart Building, Loring Hall, and the Library which you are able to visit at any time. These should be considered safe locations if you feel threatened in any way. You can also call Security on 020 7919 7105
- Goldsmiths has extensive 24/7 CCTV coverage which we make available to the police when they investigate incidents
- CCTV footage already shared with the police has helped identify potential suspects in recent incidents
- Our Campus Support Officers provide overnight wellbeing support from 6pm to 6am
What you can do to stay safe
For some students this may your first time living in a large city. Like cities across the world, crime sadly occurs in London and everyone living here can take simple steps to help stay safe, especially at night.
- Avoid using your phone openly while walking
- Don’t use earphones on both ears when walking alone
- Try and walk with a friend or in groups
- Avoid taking shortcuts at night through parks and other poorly-lit areas
- If you are the victim of an incident or witness an incident you should telephone the emergency number 999 to alert the police
- If you are reporting an incident which has already occurred and nobody is in immediate danger you should dial 101 to contact the police
- Always report incidents to the police as soon as possible, and share the CAD number/Crime reference with our Security team
- The police have further guidance on how to stay safe
Responding to a recent trial
The recent incidents happened while a trial of a Goldsmiths student for the murder of another Goldsmiths student was ongoing. This was a deeply tragic case with the jury returning a guilty verdict of murder.
Goldsmiths has responded to this by setting out the support available to our community alongside paying tribute to the victim Zhe Wang.
