Support following trial involving Goldsmiths students
Our community may have seen media coverage of a trial where one Goldsmiths student was accused of murdering another Goldsmiths student.
The trial has now concluded with the jury returning a unanimous verdict of murder. Joshua Michals is to be sentenced for the murder of Zhe Wang at a later date.
Since Zhe Wang’s tragic death in March 2024, this has been a deeply upsetting situation for her family, students and staff with Goldsmiths providing support for all those affected.
In particular, sincere thanks go to Victoria Chwa in Goldsmiths’ Students Union for her dedication in helping Zhe Wang’s family as they spent time in the UK before and during the trial – Victoria’s contribution and kindness cannot be underestimated.
Dr Francis Gilbert, Senior Lecturer in the School of Mind, Body and Society has paid tribute to Zhe Wang on the Goldsmiths website.
Goldsmiths takes the issue of violence against women and girls very seriously and we have a range of measures in place to address these matters. This includes embedding compulsory guidance and training into student induction, delivered in-person and digitally, to set out expectations around consent and healthy relationships, as well as where to go for wellbeing, crisis and mental health support more generally.
Our wellbeing teams and the Students’ Union deliver campaigns throughout the year to raise awareness with the SU’s Consent and Relationships Education Project (CARE) which is a student-led culture change initiative fostering a community of care, safe from abuse and sexual violence through workshops, collaborations, and open conversations.
Anyone in our community who is experiencing these issues can report them and get support through our Report and Support system.
Information about emergency support from outside the university is on the Goldsmiths website.
