SPSS

SPSS is a software package published by IBM and used for statistical analysis.

The version of SPSS Statistics used on campus is version 27. This version is not compatible with MacOS Sonoma without the patch fix mentioned in the please note section under SPSS. 

The process for installing this application is straightforward, however it contains many steps. Please ensure you follow the instructions below carefully.

Before attempting to install SPSS, ensure you have acquired an SPSS licence code from the IT Software self-service web page.

Once you have a licence code and have downloaded the necessary SPSS installer and patches, you can follow the steps below to install the software.

Please ensure you are connected to the internet throughout the installation and software licensing process.

SPSS installer is a compressed (.zip) file. On Windows, instead of double-clicking once downloaded, right-click on the installer and select Extract All... This must be done before the installation steps below.

Updating licence code (Windows)

To update SPSS to the new license code:

  1. Go to the Start menu > All Programs > IBM SPSS Statistics > IBM SPSS Statistics 27 License Authorization Wizard
  2. Right-click the License Authorization Wizard and select Run As Administrator
  3. License Status: this shows the SPSS components you are currently licenced for and their expiry dates. Click Next
  4. Under Product Authorization, please select Authorized user license and click Next
  5. Copy and paste the new authorisation code emailed to your university account and click Next
  6. Licensing Completed lists all licences installed with their expiry date. Click Finish

Updating licence code (Mac)

To update SPSS to the new license code:

  1. Go to the Applications folder > IBM > SPSS > Statistics > 27 > double-click SPSS Statistics License Authorization Wizard.app
  2. License Status: this shows the SPSS components you are currently licenced for and their expiry dates. Click Next
  3. Select License my product now and click Next
  4. Copy and paste the new authorisation code emailed to your university account and click Next
  5. Successfully processed all codes. Click Next
  6. Click Finish

Installers

To obtain the SPSS installer(s), click the link below that is appropriate to your Operating System. You must also download the patch fix for the version you download if available to ensure proper functionality of the software.

You will be prompted to log in with your credentials. Download the appropriate installer and fix but do not run the installer until you have a license code. You will be prompted for your username and password.

Once you have obtained the SPSS installer, patches and licence code, you are ready to install the software. This process can take up to 30 minutes.

Installation guide (Windows)

  1. Go to the SPSS installer you have downloaded and saved on your machine
  2. Right-click on the installer and select Run as Administrator, then click on Next
  3. Select Authorized user license option (DO NOT select Concurrent user license) and click Next
  4. Select the I accept the terms of the licence agreement option and click Next
  5. Enter your name, organization (Goldsmiths, University of London) and click Next
  6. Choose the language you'd like Help to display in - English is the only one installed by default - click Next
  7. Don't enable JAWS unless you need to. Click Next
  8. Choose Yes to install Essentials for Python and click Next. You will need to accept the license agreement once more at this point
  9. Click Next to accept the default installation folder. We recommend that you do not install SPSS to a location other than the default
  10. Click Install to begin the installation. This will take a few minutes depending on the specification of your computer
  11. SPSS Statistics is now installed. You do not want to Register for product updates etc since the software is already registered by the College. Ensure the box is not ticked (click the tick to remove it), then click OK
  12. Select Licence my product now and click Nextthen copy and paste the license you received by email. Click Next twice and then Finish

You will now need to restart your machine and then install the patch(es) you downloaded. For the patches simply follow the installation wizard by clicking on Next, Ok or Finish when appropriate and restarting your machine after each installation.

Installation guide (Mac) 

  1. In the Finder go to the location where you have saved the installer .dmg file (probably Downloadsand double-click on the SPSS.dmg file
  2. A Finder window will open. Double-click the SPSS_Statistics_Installer.app file
  3. This may warn you that it was downloaded from the Internet and ask if you want to open it. Click on Open. Please note that depending on your version of Java, you may first need to download a specific version of Java Runtime Legacy in order to successfully run the SPSS installer. If you receive a Java pop up message at this stage, follow the link in the pop up to the necessary download page to obtain the necessary version of Java Runtime Legacy
  4. You will be asked to type in the administrator account details for your Mac. This is NOT your Goldsmiths campus credentials, but your Mac ones. Enter your administrator password and click OK
  5. You should then be able to choose the language for the installation process. Leave it at English unless you want to use a different language and click OK then Next
  6. Select the Authorized user license option (DO NOT select Concurrent user license) and click Next
  7. Accept the terms of the License Agreement, then click on Next
  8. Choose the language you'd like Help to display in - English is the only one installed by default, then click on Next
  9. Choose Yes to install Essentials for Python and click Next. You will need to accept the license agreement once more at this point
  10. Click Next to accept the default installation folder. We recommend that you do not install SPSS to a location other than the default
  11. Click Install to begin the installation. This will take a few minutes depending on the specification of your computer
  12. SPSS Statistics is now installed. You do not want to register for product updates etc since the software is already registered by the College. Ensure the box is not ticked (click the tick to remove it), then click OK
  13. Select Licence my product now and click Nextthen copy and paste the license you received by email. Click Next twice and then Finish

Please note:

  • If you are running MacOS Sonoma, you will need to download a patch file from here and read the text document “Readme_27.0.1.0-28.txt” for instructions on how to apply the patch after installing SPSS 27. Without the patch fix, SPSS 27 will not work on MacOS Sonoma

  • Your SPSS licence code generally lasts for 12 months from the start of July. IBM provides an additional one month grace period, and so all SPSS licence codes should remain valid until the end of July

  • If you receive a Windows Security Alert about Java(TM) Platform SE Binary - Publisher: IBM, click on Unblock and it should not appear again. This is a helper program for SPSS

  • Unless you have a good reason not to, please select Use Unicode encoding, if prompted

SPSS AMOS is add-on software for the SPSS package published by IBM and it is used for structural equation modelling, path analysis, and covariance structure modelling. The process for installing this application is straightforward, however, it contains many steps. Please ensure you follow the instructions below carefully.

  2. Accept the License Agreement and insert your username and organisation (Goldsmiths, University of London)
  3. Follow the installation wizard by clicking on Next until it asks you to license your product
  4. Select License my product now, copy and paste the license you received by email, then click Next and Finish

SPSS Modeler is a data mining and text analytics software application. It is used to build predictive models and conduct other analytic tasks. It has a visual interface which allows users to leverage statistical and data mining algorithms without programming. 

You will need to download both the Base version and Premium to get all the features installed for the version number. Only version 18 is available for Windows in 32-bit.

  • Select License my product now and click Next
  • Copy and paste the new authorisation code emailed to your university account and click Next twice, then Finish

Installers:

To obtain the SPSS Modeler installer, click the link below that is appropriate to your Operating System. You will be prompted to log in with your credentials. Download the appropriate installer but do not run it until you have a license code. You will be prompted for your username and password. The patch, if present, needs to be installed after the main installation files, making sure SPSS Modeler is closed. 

The patch installer contains a text file. Please read to ensure the correct files for the application are replaced. The default installation root folder (installdir) for the SPSS Modeler 18.3 application on a Windows operating system is C:\Program Files\IBM\SPSS\Modeler\18.3.0 and on a MacOS is /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Modeler/18.3.0. If a different location was specified at the time of application installation then please disregard the locations stated above.

Once you have obtained the SPSS Modeler installer and licence code, you are ready to install the software. This process can take up to 30 minutes.

  1. Run the downloaded installer after the zip file has been extracted if applicable and select Single user license (I purchased a single copy of the product)
  2. Accept the License Agreement and insert your username and organisation (Goldsmiths, University of London)
  3. Follow the installation wizard by clicking on Next until it asks you to license your product
  4. Select License my product now, copy and paste the license you received by email, then click Next and Finish

Installing SPSS Modeler Premium

Before you start installing the Premium package you must have the base package installed by following the steps above.

  1. Once you extract the files from the .zip folder downloaded, an explorer window will appear with your extracted files, find the setup.exe file and double click it to run the installer
  2. Accept the License Agreement and insert your username and organisation (Goldsmiths, University of London)
  3. Follow the installation wizard by clicking on Next
  4. You might get prompter by Windows Security Alert, click Allow Access

SPSS Modeler Premium is now installed.
