Mick Grierson is a Professor in the Department of Computing at Goldsmiths. His research explores new approaches to the creation of sounds, images, video and interactions through signal processing, machine learning and information retrieval techniques. Mick is also the director of the Daphne Oram Collection, and co-founder of the Daphne Oram Trust.
Hardware and software based on his research has been widely used by world leading production companies, tech startups and artists including the BBC, Channel 4, Sigur Ros, Christian Marclay, Martin Creed and many others. He is Principal Investigator on the £1million Artificial Intelligence project MIMIC, which is a partnership between Durham University, Sussex University, and Google's Project Magenta.

Mick leads the PhD programme in Arts and Computational Technology, as well as Goldsmiths' 4-year MSci in Creative Computing / Computer Science.
He was programme leader for BSc Creative Computing (2008-2015), joint programme leader for MA/MFA Computational Arts / Studio Arts (2010-2011), and programme leader for MA/MFA Computational Arts (2012-2015). Mick was also programme leader for BSc Digital Arts Computing until 2015. At UG and Masters level, he currently convenes year 3 and 4 Advanced Topics in Computing, year 3 Advanced Audiovisual Processing, and year 2 Computer Graphics (Perception and Multimedia).
Mick continues to work with industry on software and hardware development projects. He has led a large number of professional consultancies, totaling over £250,000 in value. Professor Grierson supervises students at all levels including PhD who are actively engaged in researching computational approaches to sound and visual media. This includes work from a range of perspectives that incorporates software engineering, human computer interaction, and practice-based arts research.
This includes work in any of the following areas :
- Creative coding, audiovisual composition, image and audio signal processing / analysis, information retrieval/pattern recognition, image synthesis, algorithmic drawing, sound visualisation and data sonification, physical computing, sound/music synthesis, computational sound art, generative sound and music, instrument design, experimental cinema and computational media arts, installation art and exhibition design.
- Real-time interaction involving any of the above topics, including games, mobile apps, installation, composition and/or performance systems, including both HCI style projects and art/design/entertainment focussed projects, or content-aware web applications.
- Biosignals projects, particularly BCI project proposals, are also welcome, as are proposals in audio, music, visual and audiovisual perception/cognition.
